Pong – Desktop XML-RPC Ping Generator

less than 1 minute read

Pong is a free desktop ping application that notifies blog tracking web services about updated blogs and feeds. A ping is a signal from a blog to the world that says “I have changed, please pay some attention to me.”

Many blogging tools generate pings automatically. For those that don’t, and for those who hand-craft their own RSS feeds, Pong is a great tool. This can also be useful for people (like me) who write a post, publish it, edit it, re-publish it, and so forth. If you edit blog posts in this fashion, it can be advantageous to defer sending pings until you are totally happy that the post is ready. Almost every ping receiver includes some sort of “debounce” logic to filter out rapid-fire pings that are not backed up by an actual change in the related feed.

Pong comes with 14 top ping receiver sites (including Syndic8) built in. Syndic8 shows new pings on the Pings page. It also extracts the newest headlines and shows them on the News page.
